Applies to: Row crops and orchards set out on regular geometry.

Assumptions

  • Uniform rectangular spacing with one established plant per position.

Limitations

  • This is the spacing between established PLANTS, not between seeds. Seed spacing must be closer by whatever germination and establishment losses are expected.

Plants per metre of row for a target density

plants_per_row_m = plants_per_ha × row_spacing_m ÷ 10000

Applies to: Checking a drill or planter setting against a target stand.

Assumptions

  • Rows are evenly spaced across the whole area.

Limitations

  • A planter is set in seeds per metre, not plants per metre. The two differ by germination and establishment.

Row length per hectare

Applies to: Estimating drill run length or in-row product requirement.

Assumptions

  • Rows run the full length of a rectangular field.

Limitations

  • Headlands, point rows and irregular field shapes all reduce the usable row length below this figure.
