Origin and distribution
Nutmeg is native to the Banda Islands in the Maluku archipelago of what is now Indonesia, where it was historically one of the most valuable spices in world trade, tightly controlled for centuries before cultivation spread elsewhere.
Indonesia remains a leading producer today, alongside Grenada in the Caribbean, which developed significant nutmeg production after the crop’s introduction there in the nineteenth century.
